Newark Castle stands as a large ruined tower house in the grounds of Bowhill House near Selkirk in the Scottish Borders, overlooking the Yarrow Water valley. Granted to Archibald Douglas, Earl of Wigtown around 1423, the castle was constructed with work continuing until approximately 1475, with surviving sections of the keep, gatehouse and defensive wall. The site witnessed pivotal historical moments, including an unsuccessful English siege in 1547 and the massacre of Montrose supporters in 1645. Damaged by Oliver Cromwell's invasion forces in 1650, Newark Castle reflects the turbulent military and political history of the Scottish Borders region during the medieval and early modern periods.
