Sanquhar Castle is a substantial 13th-century ruin in Nithsdale, Dumfries and Galloway, originally built by the Ross family and later held by the influential Crichton and Douglas families. The fortress survived visits by Mary, Queen of Scots in 1568 and King James VI in 1617, featuring a four-storey tower, ruined hall block, and semi-circular tower arranged around a courtyard. Though extensively damaged and now fenced for safety, the castle's dramatic hilltop setting and storied past as a stronghold of powerful Scottish families continue to mark it as a significant historical landmark in the region.
