Trematon Castle stands near Saltash as a Norman motte-and-bailey fortress with 12th-century additions, occupying a strategically significant site since Saxon times. The castle's oval-shaped keep features impressive walls 10 feet thick and 30 feet high, built in the later 12th century in architectural style similar to nearby Restormel Castle. Historically significant as the location where treasures from Sir Francis Drake's 1580 circumnavigation voyage were temporarily stored, the castle passed to Earl Richard in 1270 and has remained with the Earls and Dukes of Cornwall ever since. While not open to public access, the castle can be viewed from the outside via Church Town Nature Reserve and surrounding footpaths.
