Uttershill Castle is a ruinous 16th-century tower house located approximately half a mile south of Penicuik in Midlothian, Scotland, standing on a hill south of the North Esk river. Built around 1510 as a two-storey bastle house with rectangular dimensions, the original structure featured a vaulted ground floor beneath a main hall. The castle belonged to the Prestons of Gorton before passing to the Clerks of Penicuik in 1702. Extended eastward in the early 17th century and later used as a gunpowder store for mining operations, the site has undergone preservation efforts since being purchased by an Edinburgh architect in 1993 with restoration in mind.
