CASTLES OSWESTRY

Whittington Castle sits near Oswestry on the Welsh border in England, a medieval fortress with roots stretching back centuries. Though specific details are limited, the castle stands as a historic landmark representative of Norman and medieval military architecture typical of border fortifications. Sycharth was a motte and bailey castle near Llansilin, Powys, Wales, best known as the birthplace and family home of Owain Glyndŵr, the last Welsh Prince of Wales. Built during the Norman period as a timber castle, Sycharth exemplified medieval Welsh aristocratic life, featuring nine grand slate-roofed halls, fish ponds, an orchard, vineyard, and peacocks according to medieval accounts. The castle remained Owain's principal residence until May 1403, when it was burned by Henry of Monmouth, later King Henry V. Today managed by Cadw, the site features a small carpark and information boards for visitors exploring this significant Welsh historical location.
