CASTLES OBAN

Dunstaffnage Castle near Oban stands as one of Scotland's oldest stone castles, constructed before 1240 by the MacDougalls on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Firth of Lorn. The fortress features formidable curtain walls among the oldest standing castle remains in Scotland, a 13th-century chapel nestled within wooded grounds, and a three-storey gatehouse erected around 1500. Robert the Bruce captured the stronghold in 1308, after which it remained under royal control until 1469. The castle gained historical fame as the imprisonment site of Flora MacDonald in 1746 before her deportation to the Tower of London for assisting Bonnie Prince Charlie's escape following the Jacobite rebellion. Today, the castle and surrounding broadleaved woodlands support pipistrelle bat populations, offering visitors a blend of historical significance and natural heritage.

Gylen Castle is a compact but impressive tower house built in 1582 by the MacDougall clan on the island of Kerrera, near Oban in Argyll, perched dramatically above sea stacks overlooking the Firth of Lorn. The castle had only a brief occupation; in 1647, during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, Covenanters led by General Leslie besieged and set fire to the structure. Designated a scheduled monument in 1931, Gylen underwent comprehensive restoration in 2006 with funding from Historic Scotland and Clan MacDougall members worldwide. Today it remains a free-entry ruin open for exploration, accessible via a five-minute ferry crossing from Oban and a scenic island walk. Below the castle lies a beautiful bay and beach area, making the site an ideal destination combining castle exploration with outdoor recreation and views of Scotland's dramatic western coastline.

Kinlochaline Castle, also known as Caisteal an Ime or 'Castle of Butter,' is a 15th-century Scottish tower house positioned at the head of Loch Aline in Morvern, Highland. Standing four stories tall with 10-foot-thick walls of rare sandstone, this strategic coastal fortress occupies one of Scotland's most dramatic settings overlooking the Sound of Mull. Legend holds that a Lady of Clan MacInnes paid for its construction with butter equal to the castle's volume. Following damage during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms in 1644, the castle was abandoned around 1690 until careful reconstruction in the late 1990s by Historic Scotland. The site now serves as a private residence while maintaining its historical significance as a testament to Highland architecture and maritime defense.

Kinlochaline Castle perches atop a rocky summit on Morvern in western Scotland, overlooking Loch Aline. This four-story fortress measures 43 by 34 feet with remarkably thick ten-foot walls constructed from large boulders and rare Lias limestone containing fossils. Known locally as 'Caisteal an Ime' or the Butter Castle, the castle earned its nickname from a legend involving a clan woman who paid the architect an amount of butter equal in size to the castle. Originally occupied by Clan MacInnes, it later fell under control of the MacLeans through violence in the 14th–15th centuries, an event that left the MacInnes without a chief. Thoroughly restored in 1890, the castle remains privately owned but closed to public tours.
