Belsay Castle, built in the late 14th century by Scottish nobleman John Stirling, stands as a sanctuary from border warfare, while the extraordinary Belsay Hall represents a Greek Revival mansion completed in 1817 by Sir Charles Monck as a remarkable confection of Greek and Roman architecture. Elsdon Castle near Rothbury in Northumberland represents the finest preserved medieval motte-and-bailey castle site in the county, built by Robert de Umfraville shortly after the Norman Conquest. Erected on a natural hill spur in the village of Elsdon ten miles southwest of Rothbury, this strategic fortress features a striking 15-meter-high motte approximately 80 meters in diameter with an embanked kidney-shaped bailey to the north. Originally constructed with wooden structures, early 12th-century modifications incorporated stone elements before the castle fell into disuse after 1157 when Henry II regained Northumberland from Scotland and relocated the de Umfraville family to Harbottle Castle. Today designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, the castle's impressive earthworks remain open to the public without charge, offering visitors a tangible connection to the military strategies of post-Conquest England.
