Denmylne Castle is a ruined 16th-century tower house built by the Balfour family in 1560 in north Fife, standing near an old water mill—the source of its name, as 'mylne' means mill in Gaelic. The castle features a distinctive cross-shaped tower with two rooms per floor and was inhabited until the 18th century when the estate was sold in 1772. Built over the site of an earlier fortress belonging to the Earls of Fife, it witnessed significant historical events including the death of James Balfour at Roxburgh Castle in 1460 and his son John at the Battle of Flodden in 1513. The castle remains privately owned but in poor condition, with a tree growing through its ruins.
