CASTLES LOCHGILPHEAD

Duntrune Castle stands on a rocky promontory above the north shore of Loch Crinan, west of Lochgilphead in Argyll. Thought to be Scotland's oldest continuously occupied castle on mainland territory, this Category A listed castle dates to the 13th century and was rebuilt in the 17th century, with early 19th-century renovations. Once the seat of the Campbells of Duntroon until 1792, the castle remains privately owned by the Malcolm family and sits on a commanding location that once guarded a key sea route from the Western Isles to the central Highlands. Perched majestically alone on its rocky outcrop, Duntrune is steeped in Highland history and features the legendary ghost of a MacDonald piper from 1615.

Castle Dounie near Lochgilphead in Argyll and Bute is an Iron Age fortified dun perched dramatically on a hilltop above Crinan, offering sweeping panoramic views towards the islands of Jura, Mull, and beyond the famous Gulf of Corryvreckan. The hill is crowned with visible sections of outer walls that retain small chambers, providing glimpses into ancient Scottish defensive architecture. The steep terrain on three sides creates spectacular vistas along the coast and toward the Sound of Jura, with clear views to Ben Cruachan on fine weather days. Accessed via a path from Crinan Harbour ascending through a forest track with picnic benches, the fort serves as a testament to the region's strategic importance in prehistoric Scotland and offers visitors a rewarding outdoor historical experience.

Dunadd Fort is a dramatically situated hillfort rising 175 feet above the Moine Mhor plain near Lochgilphead, serving as the capital of Dál Riata from approximately AD 500 to AD 900. This Iron Age and early medieval stronghold was the coronation place of ancient Scots kings who migrated from Ireland to establish their kingdom in Argyll. The rocky outcrop bears extraordinary carved features including two human footprint shapes possibly used in royal inauguration ceremonies, a Pictish boar, and ogham script inscriptions from the 8th century. Located just north of Lochgilphead along the A816, this scheduled monument provides powerful testament to Scotland's early medieval political and cultural significance in the formation of the nation.

Kilmory Castle, also known as Kilmory House, is a large 19th-century Gothic mansion located just south of Lochgilphead on Scotland's west coast. Designed by architect Joseph Gordon Davis, the house may have had medieval origins dating to the 14th century and remained in the Campbell family for over 250 years before later becoming the headquarters of Argyll and Bute Council. The property is protected as a category B listed building, and its gardens are open to the public as part of a country park.
