Blackness Castle rises dramatically on the Firth of Forth near Linlithgow, often called 'the ship that never sailed' due to its distinctive ship-like silhouette. Built by Sir George Crichton in the 1440s as Linlithgow's principal port fortress, this 15th-century stronghold served multiple roles: royal stronghold, state prison, artillery fort, and ammunition depot. The castle was significantly strengthened in the mid-16th century by Sir James Hamilton of Finnart, making it one of Scotland's most advanced artillery fortifications. Its long, narrow shape and pointed towers have made it a favourite filming location, notably for the series Outlander, drawing visitors to its imposing clifftop position.
