CASTLES LEOMINSTER

Wigmore Castle stands as one of the most important fortresses of the Welsh Marches, founded in 1067 by William fitz Osbern as a Norman stronghold defending the border between England and Wales. The castle became the chief seat of the Mortimer family, who controlled vast territories across central Wales for over five centuries. The remarkable ruins, largely buried to first-floor level by earth and fallen masonry, were deliberately preserved in their natural state during 1990s conservation work to protect rare flora including ploughman's spikenard and bat species. Hampton Court Castle is a 15th-century castle in the Herefordshire countryside near Leominster, originally built to display wealth and power rather than for military function.
