The Needles Old Battery and New Battery represent two distinct chapters of Isle of Wight's military heritage on its dramatic western cliffs. The Old Battery, constructed in 1862 as part of Lord Palmerston's chain of coastal defences against French invasion, features an underground tunnel leading to a searchlight emplacement and two original two-tonne guns. The New Battery, built in 1895 to prevent cliff subsidence from the heavier artillery, became a top-secret Cold War research centre where scientists developed rockets including the Black Knight and Black Arrow, plus the Prospero satellite. Both structures, now managed by the National Trust, offer visitors a compelling combination of Victorian military architecture and mid-20th century scientific innovation.
