Horsford Motte and Bailey Castle is a Norman fortress in Norfolk, built by Walter de Caen following the Norman Conquest on lands granted by William the Conqueror to Robert Malet. The castle features a substantial motte measuring 77 metres by 85 metres with a 2.3-metre height, and a single bailey 72 metres by 32 metres wide, built on the periphery of the estate in heathland. The castle likely served as a hunting lodge or country retreat in later centuries before going out of use around 1431. The earthworks remain visible today on aerial photographs and on the ground as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, offering insight into Norman military engineering and settlement patterns.
