Helmsley Castle is a striking medieval fortress in North Yorkshire, built after 1120 by Walter Espec. The castle developed over centuries into a complex of stone defences featuring a distinctive D-shaped East Tower and multiple rounded towers. The Manners family converted the medieval stronghold into a comfortable residence during the 16th century, adding fine timber panelling and plasterwork. After a legendary three-month siege during the English Civil War, Parliamentarian forces ordered the destruction of key defences, leaving partial ruins that remain visible today. The castle now stands as a picturesque ruin managed by English Heritage, with surviving stonework and Elizabethan modifications offering insight into both military and domestic medieval architecture.
