Saltcoats Castle is an unusual ruined 16th-century courtyard castle situated approximately half a mile south of Gullane in East Lothian, designated a scheduled monument. Built around 1590 by Patrick Livingstone, the castle features ranges of two-storey buildings arranged around a central courtyard, with one section rising to four storeys, and was named after the salt marsh that once defended the site. Though largely uninhabited for over two centuries and now heavily overgrown with vegetation, the castle retains historical significance through the legend that the Livingstones received the property for slaying a wild boar terrorising the region.
