Dunrobin Castle in Golspie is the most northerly great house in Scotland and the largest residence in the Northern Highlands, with 189 rooms dating from the early 1300s. The castle resembles a French château with towering conical spires, built atop medieval foundations and dramatically transformed by architect Sir Charles Barry between 1835 and 1850. Located on the east coast overlooking the Moray Firth, it served as a naval hospital during World War I and a boys' boarding school from 1965 to 1972. The castle remains one of Britain's oldest continuously inhabited houses and offers self-guided tours through approximately 20 rooms, operating annually from April to October.
