Eccleshall Castle stands on the edge of the small market town of Eccleshall in Staffordshire as a Grade II* listed building and scheduled ancient monument. Originally licensed by King John around 1200 and rebuilt circa 1310 by Bishop Walter Langton, the castle has been historically associated with the Bishops of Lichfield throughout most of its turbulent history. The moated quadrangular site comprises a rectangular platform surrounded by a moat up to 21 metres wide and includes the 14th-century bridge. Occupied by the Carter-Motley family for over a century, the castle remains a private family home but occasionally opens its gardens for charitable fundraising events.
