CASTLES DOVER

Dover Castle is a historic fortress perched on the white chalk cliffs overlooking the English Channel, commanding the strategic gateway between England and Continental Europe. Dating to the Norman period and expanded through medieval and modern eras, the castle features a keep, curtain walls, and extensive underground tunnels that served crucial roles throughout its centuries-long history. Managed by English Heritage, the castle welcomes visitors to explore its diverse architectural periods, military installations, and engineering achievements spanning over 900 years. The dramatic clifftop location provides commanding views across the Strait of Dover while the castle itself preserves rooms, fortifications, and interactive displays documenting its evolution from royal stronghold to modern heritage destination.

Western Heights in Dover represents one of Britain's most important fortification systems, begun during the Napoleonic Wars and completed in the 1860s. This vast network of linked forts, redoubts, and miles of ditches was designed to protect Dover from French invasion. The North Centre Bastion and the Drop Redoubt, now maintained by English Heritage, showcase the scale and sophistication of 19th-century military engineering. Following abandonment by the Army between 1954 and 1961, Western Heights has been designated as a local nature reserve, with its chalk grassland supporting important protected species and wildlife habitats.

The Citadel forms the northern core of Dover's Western Heights, a sprawling 33-acre fortification spanning 54 buildings and covering 1779 origins through completion in the 1850s. Also known as the North Centre Bastion, this Napoleonic-era fortress was redesigned between 1804 and 1815 and remains among the country's most impressive military structures from that period. With scheduled monument and multiple listed building designations, the Citadel transitioned from military barracks after 1890 to serve as a military prison, youth institute, and immigration facility since the 1950s. Recent development visions propose transforming the complex into 'The Little City', featuring hotels, galleries, cultural spaces, and sustainable residential components.

Fort Burgoyne is a scheduled ancient monument dating to the 1860s, positioned dramatically beside Dover Castle and overlooking the iconic White Cliffs of Dover. Built between 1861 and 1873 following the recommendations of Field Marshal Sir John Fox Burgoyne, the fort was designed to defend the castle on its landward side and prevent enemy batteries establishing positions on the surrounding high ground. Designed with a polygonal system featuring detached redoubts, it was engineered to mount 29 guns and accommodate over 270 men. Now owned and managed by the Land Trust and White Cliffs Countryside Partnership, the West Wing Battery welcomes visitors on weekdays, featuring restored historical elements including the gatehouse, gun platform, and gun shed.
