CASTLES DEAL

Deal Castle stands as a masterpiece of Tudor military engineering, built by Henry VIII between 1539 and 1540 on the Kent coast near Deal. The fortress features a distinctive circular design with a central keep surrounded by six circular bastions, allowing all-round firepower from over 140 guns. Designed by Dutch military engineer Stefan von Haschenperg to defend against French and Spanish invasion, the castle's thick walls—up to 11 feet thick—housed an impressive arsenal. Originally a purely military installation, it was gradually transformed into a genteel residence by 1730. English Heritage now maintains the site for public visitation, offering insights into 16th-century coastal defense architecture.

Walmer Castle was constructed in 1540 as one of Henry VIII's innovative chain of coastal defense fortifications, later transformed into an elegant stately home with magnificent gardens. The castle became the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, hosting an extraordinary succession of notable figures including the Duke of Wellington and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Eight acres of distinctive gardens feature herbaceous borders, woodland walks, a kitchen garden, the Queen Mother's contemporary garden, and a striking yew cloud hedge, all complemented by wildflower meadows and sea views. Managed by English Heritage and open daily to visitors, Walmer Castle exemplifies the successful evolution from martial stronghold to cultural landmark while maintaining its historical significance.
