Castell Dinas, perched at 1,476 feet in the Brecon Beacons National Park, holds the distinction of being the highest castle in England and Wales. Positioned on the westernmost end of Y Grib ('Dragon's Back'), this isolated medieval fortress commands sweeping views across Powys. Though detailed records are sparse, the castle declined in importance after just a few years following the construction of a more accessible fortress in Brecon itself, yet remained nearly continuously occupied until Owain Glyndwr's rebellion destroyed it in the early 15th century. Today, little remains visible beyond the base of a gate tower and grassy mounds indicating where the thick-walled rectangular keep once stood. Accessible via a steep half-mile trail from the nearby Dragon's Back pub, Dinas Castle rewards adventurous visitors with its remote location, dramatic elevation, and the sense of medieval ambition expressed in this windswept mountain stronghold.
