CASTLES BISHOP AUCKLAND

Auckland Castle in Bishop Auckland, County Durham, is one of Europe's best-preserved Bishop's palaces, serving as the seat of the Prince Bishops of Durham who governed vast sections of Northeast England with exceptional powers. The site spans nearly 1000 years of history and reopened in 2019 following extensive conservation restoring original wall colors, furniture, and textiles. Key features include St Peter's Chapel, one of Europe's largest private chapels, a Georgian Gothic Throne Room designed by James Wyatt, and the Long Dining Room housing Spanish artist Francisco de Zurbarán's paintings of Jacob and his Twelve Sons since 1756. The palace operates Wednesday-Sunday 10:30am-4:00pm with on-site dining and free Wednesday chapel services.

Stanhope Castle is a Grade II listed castle built in 1798 by Member of Parliament Cuthbert Rippon in the market town of Stanhope, County Durham. Positioned on the edge of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this neoclassical structure overlooks the River Wear and represents the architectural ambitions of the Georgian era. Though possibly built on the site of a much older medieval fortification, the current castle exemplifies 18th-century country house design with its distinctive towers and formal composition. Today, the castle functions as holiday accommodation featuring apartments within its historic structure, allowing visitors to experience this heritage landmark while exploring the surrounding countryside of the Yorkshire Dales region and nearby historic sites.
