Lindisfarne Castle is a converted Tudor fort perched on a crag atop Holy Island in Northumberland, famously described as "a castle that's not a castle, on an island that's not an island." Transformed by architect Sir Edwin Lutyens into a private holiday residence for Country Life magazine founder Edward Hudson, the fairytale castle showcases Lutyens' architectural mastery through its furnished rooms and distinctive character. Norham Castle overlooks the River Tweed near Berwick-upon-Tweed, a strategic fortress established in 1121 by Bishop Ranulph Flambard as the administrative center for Durham's northern territories. The castle's imposing 12th-century keep, rebuilt on a grand scale by Bishop Puiset, stands as a testament to medieval power and prestige. Over its 500 years of military significance, Norham was besieged at least 13 times, including a nearly year-long siege by Robert Bruce, and played host to Edward I during his arbitration over the Scottish throne in 1291. The castle's vulnerability to cannon fire became evident in 1513 when James IV captured it. English Heritage now preserves the dramatic ruins, which remain symbols of the castle's crucial role in border defense.

Berwick-upon-Tweed Castle and Ramparts represent a unique blend of medieval fortress and Renaissance military engineering on England's Scottish border. Founded around 1124 by King David I of Scotland to defend an important harbour, the castle later surrounded by two miles of distinctive Elizabethan bastion walls built from 1558 onward. These remarkable ramparts, designed in an Italian style unique to Britain and ordered by Queen Elizabeth I, feature massive bastions and remain among England's most complete Renaissance fortifications. The entire circuit can be walked, revealing the town's strategic significance through centuries of Anglo-Scottish conflict. Managed by English Heritage, the site remains a compelling testament to medieval castle architecture and Elizabethan military innovation.
