Slough Fort, also known as Palmerston Fort, is a D-shaped granite fortification built in 1867 on the Thames Estuary near Allhallows-on-Sea in Kent. Constructed during a period of tension with France, the fort featured seven casemates designed to protect vulnerable waters from potential enemy landings. Originally armed with multiple rifled breech loaders, the fort was disarmed in 1912 and later housed a small zoo before becoming a community restoration project. Today, Slough Fort operates as a charity dedicated to preserving this important Victorian-era coastal defence structure.
