CASTLES ABERFELDY

Castle Menzies is a splendid 16th-century Scottish castle in Aberfeldy that served as the seat of the Menzies clan for over 500 years, exemplifying Renaissance transitional architecture in Scottish castle design. The castle hosted both Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1746 and the Duke of Cumberland four days later during the Jacobite period, representing pivotal moments in Scottish history. Rescued from ruin in 1957 by the Menzies Clan Society, it became a charitable trust in 1993 and earned recognition as the 3rd best castle in Scotland by The Times in 2023. Unlike many Scottish castles, it offers an authentic experience allowing visitors to explore almost every room independently, showcasing original stone walls, shot holes, and restored 16th-century stonework. Taymouth Castle Estate is an impressive 19th-century baronial mansion built between 1801 and 1842 in picturesque Perthshire near Aberfeldy, incorporating cellars and remains of a 16th-century tower house of the Campbells of Breadalbane. The massive Victorian edifice, completed in stages by the first marquis and embellished with a west wing for Queen Victoria's 1842 visit, sits on extensive grounds beside the River Tay accessible by foot on a waymarked circular walking trail. Though not open for interior tours, the estate remains an iconic landmark of Scottish baronial architecture hidden within Tay-side landscape.
