Castillo Templario de Peñafiel crowns a dramatic cliff overlooking the Eljas River gorge in Cáceres province, Extremadura, standing as sentinel between Spain and Portugal. Originally constructed during the 9th-century Muslim period as a frontier garrison, the fortress gained prominence from 1166 onwards as part of the Christian-Arab frontier defence system. Conquered by Alfonso IX in 1212 and granted to the Order of Alcántara, it became an important military commandery linking castle networks across the region. The fortress exemplifies medieval border architecture adapted to steep terrain, though structural deterioration has placed it on the Red List of Heritage in Danger, requiring careful preservation for future access.
