Torre Luzea in Zarautz, Gipuzkoa, is a magnificently preserved 15th-century tower-palace that exemplifies Basque civil Gothic architecture. Located on Kale Nagusia (main street) in the old town between San Sebastian and Bilbao, the masonry stone structure features three floors and a ground level with distinctive large Gothic windows and the coat of arms of the Zarautz Family. Built as a watchtower fortress to defend the Basque coast, the interior contains beautiful paintings dating to the 16th century. Though not open to the public, Torre Luzea ranks among the finest examples of civil Gothic buildings in Gipuzkoa and represents the architectural sophistication of maritime Basque noble families.
