Castillo de Los Funes dominates Villel de Mesa in Guadalajara's Castilla-La Mancha region from a rocky outcrop featuring 40-meter vertical walls. Built by the Funes family in the late 13th century following Manrique de Lasa's repopulation efforts, this rectangular fortress employed Arab stucco techniques with rammed earth (tapial) cores and ashlar stone facing that created notably thick defensive walls. Strategically positioned between competing Castilian and Aragonese territories, the castle witnessed centuries of regional conflicts and dynastic control, eventually becoming a Marquesate possession. Though historically neglected and listed on Hispania Nostra's Red List of Heritage, emergency consolidation works completed in 2022 have stabilized this important medieval fortress.
