Castillo de Villel dominates the town of Villel in Teruel province from an inaccessible rocky peak rising 65 meters above river level in the Turia Narrows. Documented from the 11th century under Muslim rule by the Banu Gazlum dynasty, the fortress achieved legendary prominence when the famous knight El Cid visited in 1093 to recover from battle wounds. Following its reconquest by Alfonso II of Aragon in 1179, the Knights Hospitaller expanded it into a major stronghold, particularly during the Grand Master Don Juan Fernández de Heredia's tenure. Though substantial ruins remain from its 14th-century heyday, the castle served as a Republican anti-aircraft position during the Spanish Civil War.
