Castle of Velasco represents the most significant fortress in Valle de Mena, Burgos, built by the prominent Velasco family between the late 14th and mid-15th centuries. Located in Lezana de Mena within the municipality of Valle de Mena, this four-story tower reaches approximately 20 meters in height with thick defensive walls surrounded by a masonry fence featuring corner cubes and protective towers. First documented in 1397 when it passed to Diego Sanchez de Velasco, the castle exemplifies late medieval military engineering complexity and ambitious construction scale. Originally an important stronghold for the Velasco family's regional influence, the castle has been restored and remains privately owned while classified by the Spanish government as a cultural interest site, preserving evidence of noble family prominence in Castilian history.
