Villarroya de la Sierra preserves a remarkable pair of complementary medieval fortifications situated on adjacent promontories. The Castillo de la Reina originated as a Muslim stronghold conquered around 1120 by Alfonso I the Battler, built with rammed earth construction, while the Castillo del Rey was erected in the 13th century following Christian reconquest. A walled enclosure connected the two castles, creating an integrated defensive system. During the 14th-century War of the Two Pedros, Pedro IV of Aragon further strengthened these already formidable defenses in 1357.
