Fortaleza de Castros is a 10th-century Muslim fortress situated dramatically between the Tajo River and Pedroso Stream gorge in Villar del Pedroso, Cáceres. Constructed around 918 during the Córdoba Caliphate, it formed part of Al-Tagr al-awsat, a defensive system protecting Andalusian territories against Christian advances. The fortress preserves access doors, internal walls, a cistern, and supporting pillars of a spectacular entrance bridge, surrounded by rugged terrain. Archaeological evidence indicates pre-fortress Vettone and Celtiberian settlements in the vicinity, making it an important site for understanding medieval border fortifications and layered cultural occupation.
