CASTLES VILLAMANRIQUE

Castillo de Montizón is a well-preserved medieval fortress perched on a rocky elevation near Villamanrique in Ciudad Real, Castilla-La Mancha. Built in the 13th century by the Order of Santiago under Master Pelayo Pérez Correa, the castle controlled strategic routes including the Hercúlea Way and the road to Jaén. Located about 10 kilometers from town, this stone fortification exemplifies medieval defensive architecture and remains one of the best-preserved castles in the Campo de Montiel region. The poet Jorge Manrique held the position of commander here during his lifetime. Today, though privately owned, the castle stands as a testament to the region's important medieval heritage and military significance.
