Castillo de Sarracín is a medieval fortress positioned on an elevated promontory in Vega de Valcarce, El Bierzo region of León province, commanding views of the Valcarce River valley. The castle was constructed in the 14th century by García Rodríguez de Valcarce over an earlier 10th-century fortification associated with the Bierzo Count Sarracino. The limestone structure measures approximately nine meters in length and features steep natural cliffs on its south and west sides, supplemented by a man-made defensive moat called the "Muralla Escudo" on the western flank. Access originally required crossing the moat and passing through defensive structures including an antemural and six arrow slits. Strategic location afforded control over frontier passages into Galicia, the Santiago pilgrimage route, and surrounded territories. Declared a Cultural Asset of Interest in 1949, the fortress sits just meters from the French Way of Santiago and represents an important landmark on the route to O Cebreiro in Galicia.
