Castillo de San Martín del Castañar in Salamanca dates to the 15th century, built as a palatial fortress overlooking the Francia River. The Count of Miranda del Castañar commissioned its construction as a noble residence for his daughter and her husband. Beyond its palatial functions, the castle served defensive purposes against Muslim incursions before eventually falling under ecclesiastical control when bishops of Salamanca used it as a prison. Of the complete complex, the keep tower and surrounding walls survive, now enhanced with a viewpoint platform offering vistas across the Sierra de Francia. The castle currently houses an Interpretation Center for the Biosphere Reserve, combining historical preservation with contemporary environmental education.
