The Castle of Castrotorafe rises from the ruins of an ancient medieval settlement in San Cebrián de Castro, Zamora province, commanding the strategic banks of the Esla River. First documented in 1129 when Alfonso VII granted jurisdiction, the fortress gained prominence under the Infante Juan de Castilla in the 14th century, controlling vital passage routes between Castile and Galicia. The castle comprises two irregular trapezoid-shaped enclosures with partially preserved structures despite interior deterioration. Now open to visitors, this archaeological site represents an exceptional resource for understanding medieval defensive architecture and territorial control strategies in northwestern Castile.
