Castillo de Sajazarra, one of La Rioja's most remarkable structures, dominates the charming village of the same name nestled among vineyards in La Rioja Alta. Built in the 15th century on the site of an earlier 12th-13th century fortress, this castle served as a crucial defensive stronghold for the Crown of Castile. The structure features a distinctive rectangular keep flanked by octagonal corner towers, representing sophisticated medieval military design. Over subsequent centuries, the House of Velasco remodeled and adapted the fortress to serve palatial functions. Today the castle houses a working winery within its walls, and though the interior remains private property, visitors can stroll through the picturesque village to admire this architectural jewel set against the rolling landscape of La Rioja's wine country.
