Castillo de la Encomienda, also known as Torre de los Moros, is a 14th-century fortress near Villanueva de la Serena in Badajoz province, built by the Order of Alcántara over ruins of the earlier Muslim castle of Mojáfar. Constructed as the administrative seat and residence of the Commanders of the Order of Alcántara, the fortress functioned both as a guardian of territorial riches and as a key military stronghold in Extremadura. The substantial structure features a distinctive southern flank with two towers—one prismatic and one cylindrical—connected by defensive walls, with two remaining towers including a circular Tower of Homage and semicircular tower. This fortification exemplifies the medieval transition from Muslim to Christian military architecture in the region.
