CASTLES PALAFRUGELL

Castell de Cap Roig is a historicist medieval-style residence with tower and battlements constructed from 1927 onwards by Russian émigré Nicolai Woevodsky and his English wife Dorothy Webster near Calella de Palafrugell. The property is renowned for its remarkable botanical gardens, which showcase eight thousand plant species from Mediterranean-climate regions worldwide, traversed by the scenic Camí de Ronda coastal hiking trail. The grounds host acclaimed summer music festivals featuring internationally recognized performers from mid-July through late August, while guided tours accommodate families, students, and pensioners. The striking castle architecture combined with the stunning clifftop location above crystalline Costa Brava waters creates an evocative setting blending history, horticulture, and cultural programming.

The Torre de Vila-seca is a cylindrical defensive tower in Palafrugell, Catalonia, constructed around 1565 to protect a farmhouse and settlement against pirate attacks. Built with a distinctive slightly sloped base and standing approximately eight meters high across two floors, the tower features gun slits and elevated doorways characteristic of 16th-century coastal defenses. Restored in 2010 and protected as a Cultural Property of National Interest, the tower represents an important example of medieval Catalan maritime fortifications with Roman origins tracing back to its settlement history.
