CASTLES NUENO

Castillo de Sen, also known as Castillo de la Peña de San Miguel, occupies a spectacular defensive position at the Paso de Roldán in Nueno, Huesca, flanked by dramatic rocky mallos through which the Flumen river flows. This early medieval fortress, documented by Arab historians from the 10th and 11th centuries, served as a strategic stronghold during the early stages of the Reconquista, repeatedly contested between Christian and Muslim forces. The currently visible remains date to the 11th and 12th centuries, revealing a fortress designed to leverage its extraordinary natural setting near the Sierra de Guara. Protected as a Good of Cultural Interest under Aragonese law, the castle represents an important chapter in the peninsula's medieval military and political history.

Perched on a dramatic rocky promontory overlooking the Isuela River, Castillo de Ordás in Huesca stands at 1045 meters altitude in a commanding strategic location. This medieval fortress, documented from 1351 onwards, features remarkable natural defenses with near-vertical cliff faces on two sides that served as impenetrable walls. The structure consists of rusticated masonry blocking the accessible approach to the promontory, which later belonged to the Urriés lords. Though now ruinous, the castle's impressive setting near the Monrepós pass and designation as a Bien de Interés Cultural make it a significant historical site, accessible via a scenic hiking trail from the mountain pass.
