Castillo de Montealegre del Castillo crowns a hill above the Albacete town of the same name, with origins tracing to an Arab fortification called Eliph destroyed in 921 AD by Ordoño of León. The present castle was built in the 1330s by Sancho Manuel but was demolished only thirty years later in 1364 during the War of Succession, when Peter of Castile authorized its destruction, leaving primarily foundations. After the year 2000, two towers were reconstructed on the original foundations as part of preservation efforts, though the castle remains fenced and unavailable for visitor access, representing the turbulent medieval history of the region.
