CASTLES MONTBLANC

Castell de Montblanc formerly crowned a hilltop overlooking the medieval walled town of Montblanc in Tarragona, dating to the 12th century. Strategically constructed as a crucial fortress during the Christian Reconquest, it provided essential defense and territorial control over the surrounding region throughout the medieval period. Though the castle structure no longer survives, the site remains accessible to visitors who can ascend the hill to enjoy panoramic views of the town and countryside below. Montblanc itself preserves exceptional medieval fortifications, with its walled enclosure representing one of Catalonia's best-preserved urban defensive systems, making the castle's former location an integral part of the town's substantial historical heritage.

The Palau del Castlà is a 15th-century Gothic civil building located in the medieval heart of Montblanc, one of Catalonia's best-preserved walled towns. Originally constructed as the seat of the castlà, or castellan—the king's military representative—the palace reflects the administrative and defensive hierarchy of medieval governance. The structure later served as a prison during subsequent conflicts, which compromised its original condition before its recognition as a cultural monument. Set within Montblanc's medieval walls, the palace exemplifies Catalan Gothic architecture and the town's historical importance as a strategic stronghold between Tarragona and Lleida.
