Castillo de Monasterio de Rodilla is a fortress built around the 11th century on an impressive rocky outcrop in Burgos province, commanding panoramic views of the La Bureba region. First documented in records around 1011, the castle served as a frontier stronghold and changed hands repeatedly due to shifting territorial control between Castile and Navarre, particularly after the 1054 Battle of Atapuerca when Navarrese forces abandoned the fortress and the region returned to Castilian rule. By the 14th century, it belonged to the Velasco family before experiencing gradual decline in strategic importance. Today, only fragmentary remains survive including the ruins of its central tower and foundations of its perimeter walls, reflecting centuries of deterioration since its military significance ended in the medieval period.
