CASTLES LAS PALMAS DE GRAN CANARIA

Castillo de la Luz in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a Renaissance fortress constructed in 1494 as the city's first defensive structure following the Spanish conquest of Gran Canaria under Governor Alonso Fajardo. With a square floorplan and three levels featuring bastions and gun ports, the castle's definitive structure was completed by the late 16th century and was officially declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1941. The fortress stands on Juan Rejón Street in the La Isleta neighborhood adjacent to the Puerto de la Luz harbor. Following comprehensive renovation by architects Nieto and Sobejano, the castle has housed the Martín Chirino Art and Thought Foundation since 2015, displaying works by the renowned Canary Islands sculptor. The venue is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday and Sunday mornings, serving as both cultural institution and historic landmark.

Bateria Santa Isabel is a historic military fortress located in the San Juan district of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, built from 1897 onwards as a defensive response to invasion threats during the late 19th century. This extensive installation features underground galleries, semi-cylindrical casements, ramps, and platforms originally equipped with artillery positions and machine gun nests. The complex reached peak activity during World War II and is catalogued as part of Las Palmas' architectural heritage, though much of the site now stands in ruins awaiting rehabilitation efforts.
