Castillo de la Beltraneja, also known as Castillo de La Codosera, stands on a hilltop along the historic Old Road in La Codosera, Badajoz province, crowned by a monumental statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus erected in 1957. First documented in 1264, the castle's surviving structures date primarily to the 14th century, when it served as a crucial defensive position on Alburquerque's border with Portugal. The fortress endured multiple destructions during sieges, particularly following a devastating seven-month Portuguese siege in 1325 and later damage during the Portuguese Restoration War. Today, the ruined castle preserves fragmentary walls and a reconstructed homage tower, testament to its strategic importance.
