Castillo de Jadraque is a castle commanding the Henares river plain in Castile-La Mancha, with a site occupied since prehistoric times and later fortified during the emirate of Spain's Moorish period. Captured by Christians under Alfonso VI in 1085, the fortress is famously referenced in the medieval epic Cantar del Mio Cid. The current structure dating to the late 15th century was designed by Juan Guas for cardinal Pedro González de Mendoza, featuring ashlar stone construction with a rectangular 240-meter perimeter incorporating four round and one rectangular tower. Originally serving as a noble Mendoza residence, the castle was later employed as a fortress during the War of Spanish Succession and the Peninsular War.
