The Ciudadela de Jaca, officially known as Castillo de San Pedro, represents one of Spain's most grandiose modern fortifications and the only completely preserved pentagonal bastion-fort of its kind in Europe. Commissioned by King Felipe II in 1591 and designed by Italian engineer Tiburcio Spanochi, the fortress was constructed outside Jaca's northern city walls with an innovative pentagonal floor plan featuring arrow-shaped bastions at each corner, all connected by covered patrol paths. The massive fortress demonstrates Renaissance military engineering at its pinnacle, designed to withstand contemporary artillery and provide comprehensive defensive coverage. Today, the Ciudadela houses an intriguing Museum of Military Miniatures featuring 23 elaborate dioramas with over 35,000 lead figures depicting battles from Ancient Egypt to modern times. Designated as a Cultural Heritage Asset in 1951, this exceptional fortress remains a masterpiece of military architecture and historical preservation.
