The Castillo de Huete stands on a hill northwest of the town center in Cuenca province, within Castile-La Mancha region. This medieval fortress, also known as the Alcazaba de Wabda or Castillo de la Luna, commands strategic views across vast territory including the Sierra de Altomira and the valleys of the Río Mayor. Founded centuries before, the castle gained prominence in 1174 when it successfully resisted an Almohad siege, symbolizing the strength of Christian frontier defense. As the strategic frontier advanced southward, the fortress gradually lost its military importance and fell into abandonment. Today, the ruins preserve fragments of medieval walls and a religious monument erected after the castle's destruction. The site, now municipal property, offers free access to visitors exploring its historic remains and the landscape it once dominated.
