Castillo de Hornachos rises dramatically on a high crag dominating the town of Hornachos in Badajoz province, Extremadura. Built by Arabs in the 9th century, it marked the frontier between Muslim kingdoms and later between the military orders of Santiago and Alcántara. Constructed primarily in rammed earth and masonry, the fortress originally featured two defensive enclosures, with the inner structure preserved despite progressive decay. Although currently in ruins, substantial sections and towers remain visible, reflecting the formidable defensive capabilities of this medieval stronghold. Despite frequent visitation, no major conservation work has been undertaken, and the site faces ongoing structural deterioration.
