Castillo de Herrera del Duque dominates the Sierra Chamorro at 745 meters elevation near Herrera del Duque in Badajoz province. Originally built in the 10th century during Arab rule, the castle was reconstructed in the 15th century by Grand Master Gutierre de Sotomayor of the Order of Alcántara to control territorial holdings. The fortress features thick stone walls enclosing a 183-meter perimeter with remnants of dual enclosures displaying Gothic and Mudéjar elements, including a dungeon, vaulted cistern, and defensive loopholes overlooking extensive surrounding landscape.
