Fuerte de Santa Bárbara is a polygonal fortification located on a promontory on Mount Santa Bárbara in Hernani, featuring masonry walls with crenellations and loophole windows. Built between 1837 and 1838, this defensive structure was designed to control the access roads to Hernani from San Sebastián and to dominate the Urumea valley. The fort saw active use during the Carlist Wars and the Spanish Civil War, with its appearance shaped by military necessity across the 19th century. Today it stands as evidence of the region's complex military heritage and the strategic importance of elevation-based defense systems in Basque country.
